Should you replace your broken phone screen yourself?

Should you replace your broken phone screen yourself?
So you had an accident and your screen got smashed or cracked, or you have lost touch or image after the phone took a hard impact or dropped. To fix it the screen assembly will need to be replaced.

The process can be either quite straight forward or long and complicated, either way replacing the screen is not something we recommend someone with no prior experience should attempt as it is very easy to cause additional damage to the internals of the phone making a simple screen repair into a more time consuming and costly additional repair.

iPhones in particular will not take kindly to having the screen display replaced; it will disable true tone and produce unknown parts message depending on which iOS you have; thanks to Apple marrying parts to the phone’s mainboard. Now to Apples credit they have attempted to solve this by allowing a pulled or new genuine display to be configured through a special software built into the latests iOS but this only works on newer model iPhones and even then we have found it doesn’t always complete the process successfully.

There are also very delicate parts on a flex that will attach to the top of the screen which needs to be transferred and if it is damage in the process then you will loose functions such as FaceID, Light Sensor or Ear Speaker; it is almost impossible to fix FaceID because apple doesn’t provide any tools to enable a replacement part to be configured for the phone.
This and many more potential problems can be caused when working on iPhones even with plenty of experience and the correct tools it can still happen so be warned if you are going to attempt a self-repair of your iPhone screen you know what you can expect.

Other pitfalls to watch out for is the quality of screen you use, always try to use genuine if your budget permits especially with Samsungs phones, if you do go with a copy don’t go for the cheapest as they often will be the worst quality but saying that the higher priced screens also might not be the best quality though chances are it will be of better quality; we recommend making sure you have a warranty for the display you buy so you can return it if the quality is not good or it is having problems such as ghost typing, inaccurate touch and poor sensitivity.

If you are still happy to give it a go yourself then by all means go for it, but we do recommend that before you start get a good set up tools and watch plenty of videos on YouTube by professionals showing you how to do it. There are plenty of great online retailers where you can buy the tools and parts for your repair such as Amazon, Ebay, iFixit and more.
